Remove as much of the spill from your carpet as you can , by blotting with a paper towel, or scraping it with a dull knife. If a large quantity of liquid was spilled, a wet vacuum will come in handy. If the spot has already dried, saturate the tufts in the affected area with tap water, but make sure you aren’t over wetting it. Allow to remain wet for about one minute and then blot. If the spot is being removed with water, continue blotting until the stain is completely removed. If it is not completely removed by the last step, then apply a small amount of detergent solution to the spot. Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the spot. If the spot is being removed, continue applying detergent and blotting with a paper towel until spot is removed. Using a spray bottle, rinse with tap water. Remove excess moisture by blotting with a paper towel.

(Those ugly black lines around the baseboards and under doorways) If you have light colored carpet, you may have experienced dark lines that appear mostly around the edge of the room and under doorways. This soiling is called filtration soiling because it comes from air passing through the carpet as it is attempting to get through the crack between the carpet and the baseboard or under a closed door. As the air passes through the edge of the carpet pile, this microscopic soiling is deposited there ( hence the term filtration soiling). This occurs over a significant period of time and is not noticed until a buildup has occurred. This type of soiling is difficult to remove because the soil particles are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet pile, sometimes into the backing of the carpet.

Can it be removed? Sometimes. With special products, time effort, reasonable results can sometimes be achieved.

To help prevent filtration soiling, vacuum and wipe the edges of the carpeting on a regular basis.

I wanted to cover the subject of how often dryer vents should be cleaned. Most dryer vents should be cleaned at least every 2 years or so. This depends on the length of your vent and how often the dryer is used weekly. Cleaning the dryer vent can help prevent the possibility of a house fire. Plus, it can save you money on electricity (or gas cost). A clean vent allows the dryer to do a better job, allowing your clothes to dry quickly with less energy consumed. Take time to notice if your dryer seems to be running longer with the same amount of clothes, it may be time to have the vent cleaned.

We often see the white flexible vinyl type vent coming out the back of 90% of dryers we service. This type of material can be highly flammable and creates dangerous fumes when catching the vinyl connector between the dryer and wall on fire. If the lint catches on fire while the dryer is running it can also blow balls of lint around in the area where the dryer sits and behind the sheetrock behind the dryer which causes the fire to spread faster. Hopefully, you catch it soon enough and the fire dept gets there in time to keep the damage to a minimum. The washer/ dryer area is one place we recommend putting a smoke detector to give a early warning about smoke or fire in this area . Also, have a good A,B, C type fire extinguisher ( like one you see in the hardware store, etc.) handy in case you need one quick. That can be the difference between you knocking down a small fire or having the house burn down.

Happy Monday! I wanted to give a few tips on stopping dirt at the door to help you keep your carpets cleaner.. Preventing dirt and grime from getting on the carpet in the first place is a great way to start keeping it clean. The following helpful hints can stop dirt in its tracks.

Use mats – Outdoor and indoor mats or runners can reduce the amount of dirt that enters the house

Take off your shoes – You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off their shoes before entering your home (socks are best because of natural oils produced by feet)

Change your air filters – Change your air filters in your furnace systems often. I personally change mine every 3-4 weeks. the more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less fall on the carpet.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am so grateful for my beautiful, thoughtful family. And I am so fond of my friends that I have and all my ‘new’ friends I have made the last couple of years. Thanks to all of you for making a huge difference in my life!

My article for this blog post is Catsup stain removal in carpets:

For the removal of Catsup you may be able to remove the majority of the stain by blotting the area with a white paper towel or perhaps even scraping excess with a dull knife. Next, blot the area with a white paper towel to reduce the moisture content. Put a small amount of soap mixture ( mix 1/4 teaspoon of dish washing soap, making sure the soap does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water. Safe soaps can be Dawn or Joy). Apply the soap mixture on the carpet, use a blotting motion to work it in. If the affected area is being diluted by the mixture keep applying and blotting with a white paper towel until the spot is invisible. Again, apply water , do not blot after this time of applying, instead make a pad of folded white paper towels then apply a brick or weight on top, let dry. http://www.anchorrestoration.com

Start off by blotting the area with a white paper towel for the removal of as much stain as possible. then to neutralize the stain, use an ammonia mix ( 1/2 cup of water and 1 t tablespoon of clear household ammonia). Significantly soak the area of attention with a spray bottle filled with the ammonia solution. Do not wet backing of carpet. Apply a white paper towel to the spot and blot to remove excess moisture. Apply a small amount of detergent mix to the spot (1/4 teaspoon of hand dishwashing soap, that does not contain lanolin or bleach, with 1 quart of water: safe detergents to be used such as: Dawn and Joy are safe to use). Use a blotting motion to the area of attention. If the spot persists beyond this point, use a white paper towel to blot the area until the spot decreases. Rinse area with lukewarm tap water in a spray bottle, blot with another white paper towel to remove excess moisture. Spray water lightly , do not blot this time: apply a pad doubled up paper towels under a brick, and allow to dry. Again, apply a pad of doubled up white paper towels with a brick on top and let stand. www.anchorrestoration.com

Wow, we can’t believe we haven’t posted in so long… Time flies when you are having fun that’s for sure! In June, Kris, one of the owners, won Woman Business of the Year Award! She is so honored!

This blog post we wanted to give a tip on removing chewing gum from carpets: Freeze the gum using an ice cube. Shatter the frozen gum with a handle of something strong (a knife or screwdriver, or use a hammer, but PLEASE don’t hurt yourself!) and vacuum up. Some citrus based products such as Orange-Sol have been demonstrated to break down the stickiness of gum so that it can be removed. www.anchorrestoration.com

Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with a white paper towel, then neutralize with an ammonia solution (1 Tablespoon of clear household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water). Saturate spot with the ammonia solution using a spray bottle. Do not wet backing of carpet. Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture. All solutions for removing blood must be cool. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; example of safe detergents are Dawn or Joy). Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture. Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry. If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for one hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water so no rinsing is necessary. Apply pad of paper towels and weight down with the brick.
