It’s the best time to think about the the indoor air quality of your home and place of business.
One of the most vital items to watch out for when you are concerned about a healthy environment and clean air is mold. With the wet fall weather creeping in, we recommend homeowners be vigilant in watching for possible sources of mold growth.
Upper respiratory tract symptoms can be linked to mold exposure, even for people who are healthy. Exposure to mold can cause symptoms like:
- Coughing or wheezing
- Eye irritation
- Throat irritation
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Skin irritation
Research has found data that links exposure to damp inside environments to respiratory illness in usually healthy kids, shortness of breath, and the the potential development of asthma in susceptible people.
The EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) has nominated the month of September as National Indoor Mold Awareness Month to raise awareness about mold.
Here are 4 steps to help prevent mold growth in your home or office:
1. Check Leaks
Inspect your roof, pipes, foundation and faucets for leaks. If you discover a leak, call Anchor Restoration and have us assess the damage right away!
2. Check Humidity Level
The optimal level of humidity for a residence is between 30 and 50 percent. Pick up a moisture humidity meter online or at your local hardware store to test your home and business. Or call us at 801-269-0343 for an in-home inspection.
3. Check for Ground Water
The accumulation of water can lead to mold growth. Inspect the outside of your home for the build-up of ground water. If you do find water build-up, the water must be re-routed using downspouts and re-grading your landscaping to flow water away from your home.
4. Check for Odors
The first sign of mold when you find a leak is the presence of a moldy or musty odor. As you check for leaks, be sure to also be aware of odors.
